Problems with the Day-Age Theory

1. The fossil record is a record of suffering and death. If the fossils were all laid down before the creation of man, then death came before sin. In Genesis 3, after the sin of Adam and Eve, God declared that they would surely die as a result of their sin. Romans 5:12 states that "as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin..." The first record of death was when God sacrificed an animal for a covering for Adam and Eve. God, in His mercy, promised to send, and did send His only Son who would die a propitiatory death of substitution for fallen men. If, in fact death was already occurring before the sin of Adam and Eve, and was not a punishment for sin, then the sacrificial death of Jesus Christ is greatly diminished. Romans 5:18 says that "as by the offense of one, judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one, the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life."

2. The Day-Age theory is an attempt to compromise the long ages of geology with the days of creation by God. A problem with this theory is that the order of creation, as recorded in Genesis 1, is incongruous with the accepted order of the long ages represented by fossils. For example, Genesis 1 says that God created whales on the fifth day (vs.21), but did not create land mammals until the sixth day (vs.24). Current evolutionary theory is that whales evolved from a land mammal similar to the cow. Another example is that God created plants on the third day, before He created the sun (though He had previously called forth light and had named it "Day"). Evolutionary theory says the universe exploded into existence by the Big Bang, and life was subsequent to the Big Bang. Therefore, the solar system would be present long before water and plants appeared on Earth. But this is not the Biblical account. Genesis 1:16 says that God created the sun, moon, and stars on the fourth day. There are many other examples which prevent the Day-Age theory from harmonizing the long ages of evolutionists with the record of creation found in Genesis 1.
