The meaning of "day" in Genesis 1

"For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day..." (Exodus 20:11 a)

Many Christians attempt to compromise with those who believe in an old-earth. These Christians say that each day in the creation week was a long period of time. During these time periods, evolution was occurring and the geologic column was laid down (the Day-Age Theory).
